Marathi Chat: Talk to Strangers in Marathi Online (2026)
Marathi has a strange online problem. Eighty million people speak it, Mumbai and Pune are two of the most connected cities in the country, and yet a Marathi speaker who opens a random chat almost always ends up typing Hindi within three messages. Not because anyone asked. Because it is the default, and defaults win when nobody pushes back. This post is about pushing back: where Marathi speakers actually find each other online in 2026, how to keep a chat in Marathi once it starts, and how to begin on Chatarooni in about a minute.
Why Marathi chats turn into Hindi chats
Mumbai runs on Hindi in public and Marathi at home, and the internet inherited that split. Type "hi" and the reply comes in Hinglish. Type "kasa aahes" and something different happens: a fellow speaker lights up, and the conversation stays in Marathi because you set the terms in the first line. The language of a chat is decided by whoever speaks first. Speak first. The Marathi chat page is the direct door for people who searched for exactly this, and Mumbai chat is the city door.
Who is looking
Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, Nagpur, Kolhapur at home. Pune's student and IT crowd is a huge share of the evening pool. Then the diaspora: the Bay Area and New Jersey, London, Dubai, Melbourne. And the people who moved out of Maharashtra for work and have not spoken a full Marathi sentence to anyone but their mother in a month. That last group is larger than you would think, and a random chat is exactly the low-stakes place to fix it.
How it works here
Press start and you are talking to one person who is online right now, under a random nickname, with no account and no phone number. If you both speak Marathi, you speak Marathi. If not, skip and the next person appears. It is the one-on-one format that replaced the old rooms, covered in online chat rooms in India, with your first line as the only filter. The Indian chat rooms page is the wider door for the whole country, and every language page here sits under it.
Typing Marathi
Romanised Marathi, "kasa aahes", "kuthun", "kay karto", is what most people type, and it needs no setup. The Devanagari keyboard on Android and iPhone types fine into the chat too, and Marathi speakers use the script more than most, so do not be surprised to see it. Either is fine. One detail that matters more in Marathi than in most languages: the greeting changes with who you are talking to. "Kasa aahes" to a man, "kashi aahes" to a woman, "kase aahat" when you are being polite or do not know. Getting that right in the first line is a small thing that tells a fellow speaker you are real.
Openers that work
- "Kase aahat?" How are you, polite. Safe with anyone until you know more.
- "Kuthun?" Where from. Short, friendly, and it always gets a city.
- "Marathi yete ka?" Do you know Marathi. The honest opener when the nickname tells you nothing.
- "Aaj kay kela?" What did you do today. Gives the other person something to say.
No "asl". It is a form, not a greeting.
Pune after 9pm
If there is one crowd that shows up in Marathi every evening, it is Pune's students and its IT shift workers. The city has more Marathi-first young people online than Mumbai does, partly because Mumbai's default is Hindi and Pune's is not. From 9pm to midnight the Marathi pool is at its fullest, and a large share of it is between nineteen and thirty, in a hostel or a rented flat, done with the day. If you are older or elsewhere, that is worth knowing: the person who replies "kasa aahes" back is more likely to be in Kothrud than in Dadar.
Marathi is not one Marathi either
Nagpur's Varhadi, Kolhapur's rounded southern Marathi, the coast's Malvani, Mumbai's fast Hindi-bent version: a Marathi speaker can usually place another within a few lines, and that placing is a conversation. "Tumhi kuthle?", where are you from, followed by "tumcha Marathi Nagpur cha vaatte", your Marathi sounds like Nagpur, is a warmer second exchange than anything about jobs. It also settles the greeting question from earlier: once you know who you are talking to, you know whether it is kasa, kashi or kase.
Text, and video when you both choose
Everything starts as text. If it is going well, either of you can turn a camera on inside the same chat, only when you both want to. Nobody is put on a webcam before typing a word. For video specifically, the Indian video chat page is the direct door, and the guide to free random video chat covers how it works and how to stay safe on camera.
Staying safe
- No full name, no phone number, no UPI, no address.
- Anyone pushing to move to WhatsApp in the first five minutes wants something other than a chat.
- Skipping is free. Use it.
The online chat safety tips cover the habits, and spotting scams and catfish the patterns.
